2013 Lincoln MKZ unveiled

Following an appearance at January’s Detroit Auto Show in concept form, Lincoln has now unveiled the production version of its brand new MKZ.

Intended to compete in the luxury midsize segment, the MKZ sedan features a distinctive sweeping roofline and a new design direction that Lincoln describes as being elegantly simple.

Complementing the smart exterior is a leather-upholstered cabin that includes innovations such as a 10.1” LCD screen in place of traditional instrumentation, Push Button Shift instead of a conventional transmission shift lever, and an Active Noise Control system for enhanced refinement.

The powertrain line-up comprises 2.0 litre four-cylinder EcoBoost and 3.7 litre V6 engines, both of which come with a six-speed automatic gearbox and are available in either front- or all-wheel drive configurations. Alternatively, a hybrid system will be offered that’s based around a 2.0 litre engine, electric motor and continuously variable transmission.

One of the technical highlights of the MKZ is Lincoln Drive Control. Standard on all models, the system automatically tweaks the ride, handling and dynamics by co-ordinating the Continuously Controlled Damping (which can be set to Normal, Sport or Comfort modes), steering, traction control, engine, transmission, stability control and Active Noise Control.

Sales of the 2013 MKZ are due to begin later this year, and Lincoln is hoping that it will attract a younger audience to the brand.

That aspiration was summed up by Jim Farley, Group Vice President, Global Marketing, Sales and Service, who said: “The new Lincoln MKZ represents the future of Lincoln in both style and substance. It is proof of our commitment to deliver a new breed of Lincolns for a new generation of Lincoln clients - motor cars that are distinctive, elegant, full of technology and a delight to own.”
