2013 Ram 1500 revealed

Ram has unveiled the new 1500 pick-up, and it’s crammed with technologies that are designed to save as much fuel as possible.

Take the engines for example. The 305 bhp (227 kW / 309 PS) 3.6 litre V6 Pentastar is reckoned to offer 20 percent more economy - as well as 42 percent more power - compared to the old 3.7 litre motor. Much of that increased efficiency is due to the standard-fit eight-speed TorqueFlite 8 automatic transmission, which is controlled via a dash-mounted rotary e-shifter.

Even the alternative, the 395 bhp (295 kW / 400 PS) 5.7 litre Hemi V8, is claimed to offer 10 percent better mileage than its predecessor.

Other fuel-saving features include a stop-start system, which switches off the engine when the truck comes to a complete stop, and a thermal management system that quickly raises the transmission and engine fluids to their optimum operating temperatures.

Also helping to reduce fuel consumption are best in class aerodynamics, height-adjustable air suspension, electric power steering, low rolling-resistance tyres, a redesigned electrical system and reduced weight for all of the major components.

Of course, there’s one item that could have massively cut fuel burn at a stroke, yet it’s still missing from the spec sheets: a diesel engine. Maybe next year?

Prices and on-sale dates for the 2013 Ram 1500 are still to be confirmed.
