New Porsche Cayenne GTS
Porsche has revealed the Cayenne GTS, ahead of its public debut at the Auto China 2012 motor show.
Distinctly sporty in nature, the new variant slots between the existing S and Turbo in the Cayenne range with regards to both performance and price.
Compared to the S, the GTS modifications begin with an upgraded chassis that features Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), stiffer suspension and a 24 mm lower ride height.
To help make the most of the handling tweaks, the 4,806 cc V8 engine has received a modest five percent power increase, meaning it now produces 414 bhp (309 kW / 420 PS) and 515 Nm (380 lb/ft) of peak torque.
As a result, the GTS can accelerate from rest to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 5.7 seconds, while the 50 - 75 mph (80 - 120 km/h) increment takes just 3.8 seconds. Impressive times, but it should be remembered that in both cases the Cayenne S is only 0.2 seconds slower.
It’s a similar story with the top speed: the GTS can hit 162 mph (261 km/h), but that’s only 2 mph (3 km/h) faster than the S. At least the extra output doesn’t affect efficiency too much, as combined cycle fuel consumption is 26.4 mpg (10.7 l/100km) and CO2 emissions are 251 g/km.
However, for many GTS buyers the stats are likely to be academic, because they will have been sold solely on the more aggressive styling. And the enhancements - which comprise a ‘twin-wing’ rear roof spoiler, wheel arch extensions, side skirts, black trim, a sports exhaust system and the front valence from the Turbo model - work well.
The theme continues inside, where the standard equipment list includes leather and Alcantara upholstery, front sports seats and a SportDesign steering wheel with paddle-shifters to control the eight-speed Tiptronic S transmission.
Sales of the Cayenne GTS are due to start this July, and the UK price has been set at £67,147. That represents a hefty £10,846 premium over the Cayenne S, but it does include a Thatcham Category 5 vehicle tracking system and a Porsche Experience Centre driving course at Silverstone.
In Germany, the Cayenne GTS will cost €90,774 including VAT.
