£5,995 Suzuki Alto

Suzuki is now offering the SZ, SZ3 and SZ4 versions of its Alto city car ‘VAT free’ until the end of September.

That means that the entry-level SZ is reduced by £1,200 to just £5,995, which probably makes it the cheapest new car currently on sale in the UK.

And thanks to the latest 1.0 litre engine with variable valve timing, running costs should be manageable too. Go for the manual transmission, and carbon dioxide emissions of 99 g/km result in zero road tax as well as a 100% discount on the London Congestion Charge. As for fuel consumption, the combined cycle figure is a very respectable 65.7 mpg (4.3 l/100km).

Equipment levels aren’t too bad either, with power steering, electric front windows, a couple of airbags, central locking, tinted glass and a CD player all coming as standard on the SZ. Okay, that still doesn’t make the Alto the last word in luxury, but it’s certainly a lot more comfortable than being crammed into a bus for the daily commute.

If the Alto is too small, Suzuki is also running similar ‘VAT free’ offers on its Splash and Swift ranges.
