McLaren 12C Can-Am
McLaren has revealed the 12C Can-Am Edition concept, which will be making its public debut at this weekend’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
Designed as the ultimate track car for North America, the Can-Am Edition is based on the existing 12C GT3 racer. However, it hasn’t been developed with any particular championship in mind, and so that means the specification hasn’t been constricted by regulations.
Perhaps the most obvious benefit of that can be seen in the engine bay, where the 3.8 litre twin-turbo V8 has been retuned to produce 621 bhp (463 kW / 630 PS). That’s the highest output ever seen on a 12C model, and furthermore it’s combined with a reduced dry weight of only 1,200 kg (2,646 lbs).
Visually, the most obvious difference compared to the road-going version is the aerodynamics package, which generates thirty percent more downforce. Made mainly from carbon fibre, it comprises a diffuser and wing at the rear, plus a splitter and dive planes up front.
There’s no mistaking the motorsport influences on the inside, either. A full roll-cage has been fitted, together with a pair of Recaro racing seats and a Formula 1-inspired steering wheel. Despite the stripped-out appearance, one concession to comfort is the air conditioning system.
The 12C Can-Am Edition is painted in the very traditional shade of McLaren Orange, with contrast provided by a satin black finish that has been applied to the lightweight forged alloy wheels and various bodywork sections.
