SsangYong Korando Sports

This autumn will see the SsangYong Korando Sports arrive at UK dealers.

Described as ‘a passenger car with pick-up versatility’, the all-new four-door, five-seat utility vehicle could face three considerable challenges.

Firstly, the SsangYong brand isn’t well recognised (the company is South Korean, although it is now 70 per cent owned by India’s Mahindra and Mahindra). Secondly, the market here in the UK for this type of pick-up isn’t particularly large.

Thirdly, some might find the Korando Sports’ appearance unattractive. The front section actually looks okay as far back as the A-pillars, but beyond that there’s an odd clash of lines that give the impression that styling responsibilities were shared by two designers who weren’t on speaking terms.

Under the bonnet will be a 2.0 litre diesel engine that produces 152 bhp (114 kW / 155 PS) and a peak torque figure of 360 Nm (265 lb/ft). An electronic stability programme, hill start assist and active roll-over protection are all fitted as standard.

Two trim levels are going to be offered. The SX comes with Bluetooth and air conditioning, while among the extra features of the EX are leather upholstery, heated seats, parking sensors and 18” alloy wheels.

Aggressive prices are expected to be one of the Korando Sports’ major selling points, but they won’t be announced until October.
