2013 Porsche Cayman

Porsche has unveiled its all-new Cayman at the Los Angeles International Auto Show. Lower, longer and - most importantly - lighter than the previous model, the changes promise improvements in both performance and economy.

Powering the lead-in Cayman is a 2.7 litre flat-six engine that delivers 271 bhp (202 kW / 275 PS) and 290 Nm (213 lb/ft) of torque. With the standard six-speed manual gearbox, that’s enough for a zero to 62 mph (100 km/h) time of 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 165 mph (266 km/h).

The optional seven-speed PDK double-clutch transmission shaves 0.1 seconds off the 0-62 mph sprint, but it also improves the fuel economy, allowing the Cayman to achieve a combined 36.7 mpg (7.7 l/100km) instead of the usual 34.4 mpg (8.2 l/100km). Carbon dioxide emissions are also reduced from 192 to 180 g/km.

Alternatively, the Cayman S features a 3.4 litre motor producing 320 bhp (239 kW / 325 PS) with 370 Nm (272 lb/ft) of torque. Predictably the extra output results in a quicker car, with the PDK-equipped version reaching 62 mph in 4.9 seconds and 99 mph (160 km/h) in 10.7 seconds. Those figures make it almost as fast as the 911 Carrera, so there’s still a danger that the Cayman S could steal sales from the more expensive offering.

European deliveries of the Cayman are due to start at the beginning of March 2013. In Germany, it will cost from €51,385, while UK prices start from just under £40,000:

Cayman £39,694
Cayman with PDK £41,616
Cayman S £48,783
Cayman S with PDK £50,705
