BMW Concept 4 Series Coupé

BMW has revealed the Concept 4 Series Coupé, which previews the model that will replace the 3 Series Coupé.

There are two instantly striking things about it. The first aspect is the styling, which manages to be interestingly elegant yet fairly safe. That’s perfectly understandable, because the 4 Series will be a volume seller for BMW and so there’s nothing too controversial that could scare potential buyers.

Long, low and with a broad stance, the design incorporates some neat functional details such as the air vents behind the front wheels. Another notable feature is the rear screen, which flows at an extremely shallow angle into a short boot lid, resulting in an almost hatchback-like profile.

The second point is the dimensions: there’s no doubt that the 4 Series is a much larger car than its predecessor, a move that potentially leaves room below it in the range for a future 2 Series.

Indeed, at 4,641 mm (15’ 3”) long and 1,826 mm (5’ 12”) wide, the 4 Series is only 190 mm (7.5”) shorter and 29 mm (1”) narrower than the previous-generation E63 6 Series.

There’s no word yet on specifications, but expect the engine choice to closely mirror that of the current 3 Series.
