2013 CLS 63 AMG unveiled

In line with the upgrades just announced for the E 63 AMG, Mercedes-Benz has confirmed some improvements for its CLS 63 AMG Coupé and Shooting Brake.

The 5,461 cc V8 biturbo engine now produces 550 bhp (410 kW / 557 PS), while peak torque is up to 720 Nm (531 lb/ft). Consequently, the 0-62 mph times have reduced slightly to 4.2 and 4.3 seconds respectively for the Coupé and Shooting Brake.

Despite the extra performance, efficiency has been unaffected. Combined cycle fuel consumption for the Coupé is still a wallet-emptying 28.5 mpg (9.9 l/100km) and carbon dioxide emissions remain at 231 g/km.

As with its E-Class sibling, there is also going to be an even more powerful S-Model version featuring a rear-axle differential lock and, in left-hand drive markets only, the 4Matic all-wheel drive system as standard.

Its output is further increased to 576 bhp (430 kW / 585 PS) with 800 Nm (590 lb/ft) of torque, which propels the Coupé S-Model from standstill to 62 mph in just 3.6 seconds. However, as with every other CLS 63 AMG variant, top speed remains limited to 155 mph (250 km/h).

In terms of appearance things are largely unchanged, although the S-Model does get unique 10-spoke matt titanium grey alloy wheels, red brake calipers, a special steering wheel and various ‘S AMG’ badges.

Deliveries of the 2013 CLS 63 AMG are set to begin this April, with the S-Model arriving in June.
