Volkswagen CrossBlue Coupé
Volkswagen has unveiled its CrossBlue Coupé concept at the Auto Shanghai show.
A potential alternative to models such as the BMW X6, the CrossBlue is a five-seat SUV based on Volkswagen’s Modularer Querbaukasten (MQB for short) transverse-engine component set. It’s actually longer and wider than the existing Touareg, but the CrossBlue is not as tall which results in distinctive low-profile proportions.
The concept is powered by a plug-in hybrid powertrain that consists of a V6 direct-injection turbocharged petrol engine and an electric motor for each axle. Combined, the system develops 409 bhp (305 kW / 415 PS) with 700 Nm (516 lb/ft) of torque. That output is sufficient for a 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time of 5.9 seconds and a top speed of 146 mph (235 km/h).
Perhaps more impressively, the CrossBlue achieves the magic 3.0 l/100km (94.1 mpg) fuel consumption figure on the combined cycle. What’s more, it can be run in pure electric mode for up to 20 miles (33 kilometres).
A number of other drive settings are also available. They include an off-road mode where the engine powers the front wheels, the rear electric motor propels the rear wheels and the front electric motor acts as a generator.
Officially, Volkswagen isn’t planning to put the CrossBlue Coupé in to production. However, that might ultimately depend on public reaction to the Shanghai concept.
