SsangYong Rexton W launched in the UK

SsangYong has given its Rexton a major update. The seven-seat SUV, which was originally launched in 2001, gains a new engine, refreshed styling and a ‘W’ name suffix.

Replacing the old five-cylinder, 2.7 litre diesel motor is a four-cylinder, 2.0 litre e-XDi200 turbodiesel unit that’s already used in SsangYong’s Turismo MPV.

Developing 152 bhp (114 kW / 155 PS) and 360 Nm (265 lb/ft) of peak torque, it comes joined to either a six-speed manual or a five-speed automatic gearbox. With the former, combined cycle economy is 38.2 mpg (7.4 l/100km) while carbon dioxide emissions are 196 g/km.

The styling revisions work well enough, but beneath the bodywork things remain very traditional. Unlike many of its rivals, the Rexton W has a separate ladder chassis and, although the front end features double wishbone suspension, the rear makes do with a rigid axle.

Nevertheless, SsangYong reckons that such a strong set-up, together with a selectable four-wheel drive system and a low range for the transmission, makes the Rexton W a proper off-roader.

Two trim grades are being offered and Bluetooth connectivity, a six-speaker audio system, cruise control, keyless entry and hill descent control are fitted as standard to both variants. The EX adds larger alloy wheels, privacy glass, leather upholstery and electrically adjustable front seats.

Other SUVs might be more sophisticated or wear posher badges, but the Rexton W is significantly cheaper than most of them. Priced from £21,995, it’s available to order now.
