2014 BMW R 1200 RT unveiled

The latest version of BMW’s R 1200 RT touring bike brings with it several significant changes.

Chief among them is a new 1,170 cc air- and liquid-cooled engine that develops 123 bhp (92 kW / 125 PS) with 125 Nm (92 lb/ft) of torque. It’s based on the twin-cylinder boxer motor already used in the current R 1200 GS enduro, but a longer secondary transmission ratio and modifications to the crankshaft and alternator should mean extra refinement for RT riders.

Also updated is the frame, which is now claimed to offer greater directional stability as well as a lower seating position. Enclosing the chassis is redesigned bodywork that incorporates a very prominent headlight unit plus a more aerodynamically efficient windscreen.

While automatic stability control with ‘road’ and ‘rain’ riding modes is fitted as standard, there are plenty of items on the options list. These include semi-active electronic suspension adjustment, a novel clutchless gear-change system and an additional sporty ‘dynamic’ riding mode.

The 2014 R 1200 RT will be available in a choice of Quartz Blue, Ebony or Callisto Grey metallic paint shades. BMW has yet to confirm a UK price.
