Nissan NT500 truck launched

Production of the all-new Nissan NT500 chassis-cab truck has begun in Avila, Spain. Offered with gross vehicle weights from 3.5 to 7.5 tonnes, it replaces the Atleon and sits above the NT400 Cabstar in Nissan’s European commercial vehicle range.

As well as the different GVW ratings, operators will be able to choose from five wheelbases that range from 2,800 mm (9’ 2”) to 4,300 mm (14’ 1”).

Inside the forward-tilting cab, the middle seat can be folded down to form a shelf and there are three glove boxes, two chilled cup holders and various A4-sized slots for documents. Available equipment across the three trim grades includes electrically-adjustable door mirrors, airbags, cruise control, a multifunctional screen, satellite navigation and automatic climate control.

All versions come with hill start assistance, traction control, an electronic stability program and anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution. Furthermore, the 7.5t NT500 features a full compressed air braking system.

Power is provided by an updated ZD30 3.0 litre four-cylinder diesel engine. In the 3.5t, 5.6t and 6.5t models it has a single turbocharger, produces 148 bhp (110 kW / 150 PS) with 350 Nm (258 lb/ft) and drives the rear wheels via a manual six-speed gearbox.

For the 7.5t variant, outputs are raised to 174 bhp (130 kW / 177 PS) and 540 Nm (398 lb/ft) thanks to an extra turbo. The more powerful motor can be paired with three six-speed transmission options: a normal manual, a manual with Servoshift pneumatic gear change assistance or a robotised automatic.

Nissan has confirmed that NT500 servicing periods are 40,000 kilometres, which is up 10,000 kilometres compared to the Atleon. The vehicle warranty period has similarly been extended from 12 to 36 months.

It remains to be seen whether the NT500 will be built in right-hand drive form.
