2014 Porsche 919 Hybrid LMP1

Porsche last won the 24 Hours of Le Mans race outright in 1998. Sixteen years later, it’s attempting to repeat the feat - and achieve success in the other seven rounds of the 2014 FIA World Endurance Championship too - with the new 919 Hybrid.

The task won’t be easy though. Audi, which has won at Le Mans twelve times since 2000 and is now a sister brand of Porsche within the Volkswagen Group empire, will be back with an updated R18 e-tron quattro. Toyota’s TS040 Hybrid also promises to be a strong challenger.

Described by Porsche as the most complex competition car the firm has ever built, the 919 Hybrid features a 2.0 litre V4 turbocharged petrol engine that produces around 493 bhp (368 kW / 500 PS).

An integrated hybrid system extracts thermal energy from the exhaust gases and kinetic energy from the front brakes and then stores it as electricity in a lithium-ion battery pack. When required, it can be released to drive a front axle-mounted electric motor, thus briefly making the 919 Hybrid all-wheel drive.

This year’s World Endurance Championship begins with the 6 Hours of Silverstone, which takes place on the 20th of April.

Romain Dumas, Neel Jani and Marc Lieb are going to be sharing driving duties in the #14 Porsche 919 Hybrid, while the #20 car will have Timo Bernhard, Brendon Hartley and Mark Webber behind the wheel.
