Ford S-Max Vignale Concept unveiled

Like Ghia, Vignale started out as an Italian automotive design house and coachbuilder. Now, like Ghia before it, Vignale has become the name for Ford’s upmarket trim grade in Europe.

The first showroom model due is the Mondeo Vignale which arrives next year. It’ll later be joined by the S-Max Vignale, just revealed in concept form by Ford.

On the outside the posh S-Max’s distinguishing features include a unique hexagonal mesh grille, polished aluminium trim, chrome door mirror caps and 21” alloy wheels. A glass roof gives the cabin an airy feel, while quilted leather seats look suitably plush.

The intention is to offer the Vignale range via a limited number of dealers equipped with ‘Vignale Lounges’ and dedicated relationship managers. It’s a move that probably recognises not all of the current network would be able to offer the premium customer experience implied by the Vignale label.

Nevertheless, Ford’s attempt to compete with the established premium marques remains a brave strategy.
