North American-spec Alfa Romeo 4C

After numerous delays and false starts, Alfa Romeo will finally return to the United States and Canada this summer with a network of 86 dealers.

The brand’s initial and (for the time-being) only offering in North America is going to be the 4C. A mid-engine two-seater, it’s constructed mainly from carbon fibre, aluminium and other composites.  Such materials promise lightness, although somehow a quoted kerb weight of 1,050 kg (2,315 lbs) is actually 155 kg (342 lbs) heavier than the European version’s. That’s a substantial 17% increase…

As the name suggests, power is provided by a four-cylinder 1,750 cc turbocharged motor which comes mated to a twin-clutch semi-automatic transmission. An output of 237 bhp (176 kW / 240 PS) with 350 Nm (258 lb/ft) of peak torque is enough for a sub-five second 0-60 mph (96 km/h) time and a top speed of 160 mph (257 km/h).

To help maximise the impact of Alfa Romeo’s relaunch the first 500 examples of the 4C will all be special Launch Edition models. Their additional specification includes a race suspension set-up, matte black wheels with red brake calipers, a unique exhaust, bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, a carbon fibre rear spoiler and a redesigned front bumper. Among the interior upgrades are a numbered plaque, sports seats, some carbon fibre trim and a leather covering for the dashboard and door panels.

In the United States the 4C Launch Edition has an MSRP of $68,400. The standard 4C meanwhile costs $53,900, which is around £31,800 at current exchange rates. Given that UK customers are being charged £45,000 for essentially the same car, it’s clear that Alfa Romeo is prepared to sacrifice profitability in order to establish a market presence.
