2015 European COTY nominees

Following an initial vote, the original thirty-four 2015 European Car of the Year candidates have been narrowed down to just seven nominees.

These models now face a second ballot in late February that will decide the overall winner. The result is then due to be announced the following month at the Geneva Motor Show.

The seven finalists are:
  • BMW 2 Series Active Tourer
  • Citroën C4 Cactus
  • Ford Mondeo
  • Mercedes-Benz C-Class
  • Nissan Qashqai
  • Renault Twingo
  • Volkswagen Passat
Apart from the Ford Mondeo and Volkswagen Passat, each of the cars on the shortlist represents a different market segment. Such diversity should make the jury’s job somewhat harder.

Nevertheless, two of the strongest contenders arguably have to be the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and Citroën C4 Cactus. That’s because both - in different ways - represent a bold departure for their respective brands.

The Scion FR-S is the third and final product to emerge from the joint Toyota / Subaru 2+2 coupé project. First Rossi Ducati unveiled

That didn’t take long. Ducati has already begun to exploit the marketing potential of having Valentino Rossi riding for its MotoGP team by announcing a couple of special road bikes. The GP Replica kits are the latest offering from the Monster Art project, which allows owners of Ducati’s naked Monster to quickly and simply change the appearance of their machines. Comprised of graphics for the tank, pillion seat cover, front mudguard and bikini fairing, the colour schemes are inspired by the GP11 racers of Nicky Hayden and Valentino Rossi. Very smart they look, too. Perhaps using either the 848 or 1198 Superbikes as the basis for a homage to Ducati’s MotoGP efforts might’ve been more appropriate, but there’ll probably be more similarly-themed models in the future. Kymco launches the Xciting S 400 maxi scooter

Kymco is hoping that its latest offering will appeal to customers who want a scooter for both leisure use and daily commuting. Accordingly, the new Xciting S 400 is claimed to have decent high-speed stability and manoeuvrability, thanks to features such as a more rigid double-braced front fork and a stronger rear hanger axle.

Honda RC213V unveiled

Repsol Honda’s challenger for the 2012 MotoGP season , the RC213V, has been revealed in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The new bike, which has a 1,000 cc engine in line with the increased capacity limit being introduced this year, will be ridden by Dani Pedrosa and reigning champion Casey Stoner. Stoner is being realistic about the team’s prospects, an understandable stance given that such a significant change to the technical regulations could potentially rewrite the formbook. Speaking at the unveiling, the Australian said: “After such a strong season in 2011, we remain focused and don’t expect to be in top form immediately. 2014 turned out to be a year of significant recovery for the new car market in Ireland. Figures released by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry show that registrations totalled 96,344, a rise of just under 30% compared to 2013 .

Electric BMW 1 Series

Following 2009’s Mini E, BMW has announced its second all-electric car. Based on the 1 Series Coupé, the BMW ActiveE is powered by an electric motor that produces 165 bhp (123 kW / 168 PS) and maximum torque of 250 Nm (184 lb/ft). That’s sufficient to get the ActiveE from rest to 62 mph (100 km/h) in nine seconds - surprisingly sluggish for an electric car, given the instant torque that’s usually available. Top speed is limited to 90 mph (144 km/h), undoubtedly in the interests of preserving battery charge. Whereas the Mini E lost its rear seats and a big chunk of boot space to its battery pack, the ActiveE retains the same four-seat accommodation as a ‘normal’ 1 Series Coupé. Luggage capacity shrinks from 370 to 200 litres though, thanks to a rear-mounted electric motor and control unit.
