Peugeot 308 R HYbrid concept unveiled

A surfeit of power plus all-wheel drive equals supercar performance for the Peugeot 308 R HYbrid five-door hatchback. Revealed in concept form, it also boasts impressive green credentials thanks to the use of plug-in hybrid technology.

The 308 R HYbrid, which has been developed by Peugeot Sport, features a 266 bhp (199 kW / 270 PS) 1.6 litre petrol engine and a couple of 113 bhp (85 kW / 115 PS) electric motors that each drive their own axle.

Those three elements are deployed in various combinations according to the mode selected.

'ZEV' prioritises the rear electric motor, drawing on its front-mounted counterpart as required while accelerating. 'Road' switches to the internal combustion engine with occasional assistance from the rear motor.

'Track' is similar to 'Road', but the rear motor is permanently on and the front motor kicks in when needed. Finally, 'Hot Lap' exploits the system's entire 493 bhp (369 kW / 500 PS) and 730 Nm (538 lb/ft) of torque. With this setting the 308 R HYbrid can hit 62 mph (100 km/h) from rest in just 4.0 seconds, before going on to an electronically-limited top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h).

Although fuel consumption figures haven't been released, Peugeot says that average carbon dioxide emissions are a low 70 g/km. Contributing to the car's efficiency is an energy recuperation set-up that's able to utilise those electric motors for retardation instead of the brakes, recharging the lithium-ion battery pack in the process.

Officially the 308 R HYbrid “gives a glimpse of the potential for ultra-sports models in the future”. A production version would instantly boost Peugeot's brand image, though.

Honda WSB team launch

Honda has unveiled its works team for the 2011 World Superbike championship . The announcement of Castrol as title sponsor means the return to a very familiar colour scheme for the pair of CBR1000RR Fireblade bikes, which will be ridden by Jonathan Rea and Ruben Xaus. As in recent years, Honda has entrusted Dutch concern Ten Kate Racing with running the factory WSB team. First thing on the Castrol Honda agenda is a two day testing session at the Motorland Aragón circuit in Spain later this week. The 2011 WSB season comprises thirteen rounds with Phillip Island, Australia hosting the opening race on 27 February.
