2016 European Car of the Year winner named

This year's European Car of the Year award was certainly a very close-run contest.

In the end, the Vauxhall / Opel Astra secured victory, but Volvo's XC90 was just fifteen points behind. The jury of fifty-two motoring journalists was particularly impressed by the Astra's value for money and – compared to the previous model – its smaller dimensions, increased interior space and reduced weight.

One surprising result concerned the Škoda Superb. Despite being the type of worthy, non-premium product that usually does well in this event, the Czech contender only managed to come sixth out of seven nominees.
