2016 BMW M5 Competition Edition launched

Only 200 examples of the M5 Competition Edition are going to be built, so it’s set to be a very rare sight.

Like the regular M5 Saloon, power comes from a 4.4 litre V8 engine which is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. However, output has been increased thanks to a higher boost pressure for the twin turbochargers.

As a result, the M5 Competition Edition boasts superior acceleration versus the standard model, but top speed remains electronically restricted.

Clearly the extra performance doesn’t affect any official efficiency tests, because fuel economy and emissions are apparently unchanged. That situation probably won’t be replicated in real-world driving, though.

Distinguishing elements include a gloss black grille, adaptive LED headlights and various carbon fibre M Performance Parts.

The Competition Package is fitted too. Usually a £6,700 cost option, this consists of a 20” alloy wheel upgrade, stiffer suspension, thicker anti-roll bars, a recalibrated limited-slip differential and a sports exhaust.

Customers will have a choice of Carbon Black or Mineral White paintwork. Both options are complemented by black Merino leather upholstery with contrasting white stitching.

Also part of the enhanced specification are a Bang and Olufsen Advanced audio system, a reversing camera, Comfort Access and a powered boot lid. Furthermore, there’s an electric sunblind for the rear screen and all seats have heating.

The M5 Competition Edition is available to order now.
