Alfa Romeo Giulia Super and Veloce confirmed

Lots of attention has been paid to the range-topping Giulia Quadrifoglio since it was first revealed last year. However, most buyers of Alfa Romeo's new compact sports saloon are invariably going to choose humbler trim grades such as the Super and Veloce, which will debut at this month's Paris International Motor Show.

The initial engine line-up for the rear-wheel drive Giulia Super comprises a 177 bhp (132 kW / 180 PS) 2.2 litre turbo-diesel in either regular or 'Advanced Efficiency' forms, plus a 197 bhp (147 kW / 200 PS) 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol. All three options come mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

According to Alfa Romeo, the AE package brings a slightly reduced ride height, unique alloy wheels shod with low rolling resistance tyres, an air-water intercooler, a low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation valve, extra cooling and revised gear ratios. The claimed result is 67.2 mpg (4.2 l/100km) and carbon dioxide emissions of 99 g/km on the combined cycle, as well as a very respectable 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time of 7.2 seconds.

As befits its name, the Giulia Veloce shouldn't be short of pace. A 2.0 litre, turbocharged, direct-injection, four-cylinder petrol unit that produces 276 bhp (205 kW / 280 PS) with 400 Nm (295 lb/ft) of peak torque is the obvious pick for enthusiastic drivers. There's also a 207 bhp (154 kW / 210 PS) 2.2 litre diesel alternative, though.

Again, the only available gearbox is an eight-speed automatic, but Veloce versions deliver their output via a Q4 all-wheel drive system. Also on the standard equipment list are xenon headlights, cruise control, sports seats, leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control and an enhanced infotainment set-up.

UK prices and final specifications haven't been announced yet.
