Audi R8 LMS GT4 announced

Audi has become the latest manufacturer to develop a GT4 race car for privateer teams.

Just unveiled at the New York International Auto Show, the R8 LMS GT4 is based on the road-going R8 Coupé V10. In fact, Audi Sport reckons that the former shares over sixty percent of the latter’s components, which should benefit ownership costs.

To comply with GT4 regulations, the 5.2 litre engine has been tuned to produce up to 488 bhp (364 kW / 495 PS) with around 550 Nm (405 lb/ft) of torque. That output gets sent to the rear wheels only via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and a mechanical limited slip differential.

By comparison, the showroom model boasts 532 bhp (397 kW / 540 PS) and quattro all-wheel drive.

The Audi R8 LMS GT4 is due to make its competitive debut at the Nürburgring 24 Hours in May. However, as a full homologation process has yet to be completed, customer deliveries aren’t scheduled to begin until the final months of 2017.
