California XXL camper van concept first view

Volkswagen has announced that its California XXL is going to be unveiled at the Caravan Salon Düsseldorf, which opens on the 26th of August.

This new camper concept is based on a medium-wheelbase Crafter. Full specification details have yet to be released, but the modifications include a bespoke high-top roof that appears to feature an extendible piece above the windscreen.

The Fiat Ducato is currently the most popular vehicle in this segment, so understandably Volkswagen has adopted an interior layout often used by converters of the Italian van.

Up front, the cab seats swivel to form a dinette with a rear two-person bench. On one side of the middle section there's a fairly rudimentary kitchen where, in the absence of an oven or microwave, cooking facilities are restricted to a twin-burner hob. Situated opposite is a wet room with a shower and toilet.

A longitudinally-mounted double bed is placed at the back. It's unclear whether or not the base can be folded up to allow the transport of bulky items, though.

While the California XXL is just a concept for now, a production version will almost certainly follow.
