The Kia Sportage is getting refreshed for 2019

Redesigned light clusters, bumpers and wheels identify the 2019 Kia Sportage, while its interior benefits from updated instruments and new infotainment systems. However, the most significant changes concern the powertrains.

In particular, the EcoDynamic+ 48V diesel mild-hybrid will be available for the first time. This combines a 2.0 litre diesel engine, a Mild-Hybrid Starter-Generator unit and a small 0.46 kWh 48 volt lithium-ion battery pack.

The MHSG – which is connected to the crankshaft via a belt – can operate in either ‘generator’ or ‘motor’ modes. When the latter is deployed, up to 13 bhp (10 kW / 13 PS) of electrical energy arrives to aid acceleration.

Furthermore, the current 1.7 litre CRDi common-rail diesel is going to be retired in favour of the 1.6 litre U3 CRDi engine. Outputs of either 113 bhp (85 kW / 115 PS) or 134 bhp (100 kW / 136 PS) are planned for the replacement.

Deliveries of the 2019 Sportage should begin across Europe during the third quarter of this year. Kia has yet to confirm final specifications and UK prices, though.
