2020 Peugeot 208 first view

Next month’s Geneva International Motor Show is going to witness the public début of the all-new Peugeot 208.

Based on PSA’s CMP platform, this B-segment five-door supermini’s attractive styling incorporates a deep front grille, exaggerated wheel arches, sculpted body sides and a darkened panel that links the rear LED light clusters. Significantly, the latest 208 is claimed to be 30 kg (66 lbs) lighter than the previous model.

Inside, Peugeot is persisting with its rather odd-looking dashboard arrangement that features a low-set compact steering wheel and a configurable ‘head up’ instrument binnacle (which now boasts a 3D display). A centrally-mounted colour touchscreen – either 7” or 10” depending on trim grade – is accompanied by seven piano-style physical switches.

Numerous driving aids have been developed for the 208. Advanced functions include extended traffic sign recognition, speed limit monitoring and recommendation, full parking help, active blind spot checking and active lane keeping.

When dealers start accepting orders towards the end of summer 2019, customers will have a choice of five engine and transmission configurations:
  • PureTech 75 – 1.2 litre, three-cylinder petrol with a five-speed manual gearbox
  • PureTech 100 – 1.2 litre, three-cylinder petrol with a six-speed manual gearbox
  • PureTech 100 – 1.2 litre, three-cylinder petrol with an eight-speed automatic gearbox
  • PureTech 130 – 1.2 litre, three-cylinder petrol with an eight-speed automatic gearbox
  • BlueHDi 100 – 1.5 litre, four-cylinder diesel with a six-speed manual gearbox
Alternatively, the electric-powered e-208 delivers zero-emissions motoring plus a range of up to 211 miles (340 kilometres) on the WLTP cycle.
