2020 Corvette Stingray Convertible launched

There have always been convertible versions of the Chevrolet Corvette, but the new C8 generation is the first to feature a solid top and a mid-engine layout.

Six electric motors are used to open the two-piece composite roof while either stationary or driving at speeds up to 30 mph (50 km/h). That operation takes around sixteen seconds and, when completed, everything is stored neatly beneath a distinctive tonneau cover with twin aerodynamic nacelles. Luggage capacity remains largely unaffected.

Power comes from the same LT2 naturally-aspirated 6.2 litre V8 which is found in the C8 Coupe. Therefore, 495 bhp (369 kW / 501 PS) plus 637 Nm (470 lb/ft) of peak torque are sent to the rear wheels via an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Chevrolet has slightly tweaked the chassis, though – the Convertible has bespoke springs and recalibrated dampers.

Customers in the USA will have three trim grades to choose from. Manufacturer's suggested retail prices (excluding freight and other charges) for the Corvette Stingray range start from:
  • 1LT Coupe – $59,995
  • 1LT Convertible – $67,495
  • 2LT Coupe – $67,295
  • 2LT Convertible – $74,295
  • 3LT Coupe – $71,945
  • 3LT Convertible – $78,945
C8 Convertible production is due to begin during the first quarter of 2020. A right-hand drive model is already confirmed for a later date, so this car should achieve more sales than its predecessors did in markets such as the UK.
