Free upgrade for WRX STI

The 2011 WRX STI hasn’t been around for long, but already Subaru is tempting potential buyers in the UK with a no-cost upgrade package.

Enhancements to the 2.5 litre boxer engine lift power from 295 bhp (220 kW / 300 PS) to 315 bhp (235 kW / 320 PS), while maximum torque rises by a useful 43 Nm (31 lb/ft) to 450 Nm (331 lb/ft) at 3,400 rpm.

As a result, the car’s zero to 62 mph (100 km/h) time falls from 5.2 to 4.9 seconds. There’s no word on whether top speed, fuel consumption or emissions are affected.

Also included in the deal is a Pioneer satellite navigation unit which features Bluetooth, a touch screen and an MP3 player connection.

The WRX STI upgrade offer runs from the beginning of April until the end of June, and applies to the hatch and saloon models. Both cost £32,995 on the road but, unless you like red or white paint, £460 will have to be added to that amount for a metallic finish.

Regardless of colour choices, that seems like good value. However, anyone wanting a rapid all-wheel drive saloon at a special offer price might want to consider the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X GSR FQ-300 SST, which is currently £29,699. It’s also marginally quicker, with a 0-62 mph time of 4.7 seconds.

The Alfa Romeo MiTo supermini is now available with the innovative two-cylinder TwinAir petrol engine. Although its capacity is only 875 cc, a turbocharger and the MultiAir electro-hydraulic valve control system mean it produces a respectable 83 bhp (62 kW / 85 PS) and 145 Nm (103 lb/ft) of torque. Performance might not be scintillating - the 0-62 mph (100 km/h) sprint takes 12.5 seconds and maximum speed is 108 mph (173 km/h) - but the TwinAir’s trump card is efficiency. Carbon dioxide emissions are only 98 g/km, a level that brings numerous benefits for UK drivers including zero road tax, a full discount on the London Congestion Charge and qualification for the lowest company car benefit-in-kind rate. Aston Martin Racing has announced that it’ll be entering a V8 Vantage in the GTE Pro category of the 2012 FIA World Endurance Championship. Aston Martin V8 Vantage GTE. Ford Police Interceptor

Ford has unveiled the vehicle it hopes will take over law enforcement duties from the venerable Crown Victoria, when production of that model ceases in 2011. The Police Interceptor is a very different animal from the Crown Vic though. Instead of V8 power and body-on-frame construction, users of the Taurus-based Interceptor will get a choice of two 3.5 litre V6 engines: either 263 horsepower with front wheel drive, or 365 horsepower with all-wheel drive. The latter comes with Ford’s EcoBoost twin-turbocharger technology, which manages to increase power while equalling the fuel economy of the normally aspirated version.
