Mazda CX-5 revealed

Ahead of a world premiere at next month’s Frankfurt Motor Show, Mazda has released the first details of its CX-5 compact crossover.

The new arrival is significant for two reasons: It’s the first Mazda to fully incorporate the firm’s ‘Skyactiv Technology’ efficiency package, and the CX-5 also marks the debut of the ‘Kodo - Soul of Motion’ design language.

With ‘a bolder family face and dynamic styling that conveys a strong sense of vitality and agility’, the fresh styling theme appears to work well, especially from the front. On looks alone, the CX-5 should provide some stiff competition for rivals such as the Nissan Qashqai and Kia Sportage.

Technical information is sparse for now, but Mazda is saying that European-spec models will get a Skyactiv-G 2.0 litre petrol engine, plus a Skyactiv-D 2.2 diesel. The latter will be available in two power outputs, and it’s expected to have CO2 emissions of less than 120 g/km.

The Mazda CX-5 is due to go on sale in early 2012.

Electric KTM Freeride

Austrian manufacturer KTM has unveiled its Freeride electric bikes at the Tokyo Motorcycle Show. Available as either an off-road enduro or a street-orientated supermoto, both versions share the same battery and motor technology. That means a peak 30 horsepower and a top speed of 43 mph (70 km/h). Performance is helped by the two bikes being so diminutive - total all-in weight is only 90 kg, including the battery pack. As with most electric vehicles, it’s the battery that will be so critical to the success of the product. Price, performance, range and recharging time are all directly influenced by it. According to KTM, the Freeride’s 2.5 kWh battery should be good for one hour of off-road riding. After that, it’ll take 90 minutes to fully recharge, although alternatively it can simply be swapped over for another one - assuming the rider can afford the cost of a spare. Aston Martin Vantage GTE

Aston Martin Racing has announced that it’ll be entering a V8 Vantage in the GTE Pro category of the 2012 FIA World Endurance Championship. Aston Martin V8 Vantage GTE. Scroll down for more images and a video. Painted in Gulf blue and orange, the car’s driver line-up has been confirmed as Adrian Fernandez, Stefan Mücke and Darren Turner. The plan is to contest all eight rounds of the WEC, which commences with the 12 Hours of Sebring on the 17th of March. For the third race - June’s Le Mans 24 Hours - a second Vantage is going to be run, but its drivers have yet to be named. In preparation for the season’s premier event the team also intends to compete in the Long Beach and Laguna Seca rounds of the American Le Mans Series.
