2014 Chevrolet Impala

Chevrolet has unveiled the 2014 Impala at the New York International Auto Show. The brand’s all-new flagship model, it’ll be a competitor to the likes of the Dodge Charger, Ford Taurus and Nissan Maxima.

Commenting on the launch, Mark Reuss, president, GM North America, said: “The 2014 Impala re-establishes this iconic Chevrolet nameplate as a design leader, with bold styling that will turn heads for years to come.”

And the styling is certainly distinctive, but whether it will divide opinion remains to be seen. Key elements include an extended rear overhang that stretches the proportions, while the body sides feature strong swage lines that draw attention to the swollen rear arches, hinting at the power that’ll be delivered through the wheels beneath.

Unfortunately, it’s a visual deception, as the latest Impala is front-wheel drive only. Buyers will get a choice of three direct injection petrol engines, all of which come with a six-speed automatic transmission.

On the inside, the focus has been on refinement and comfort. To achieve that, various sound-absorbing and sound-suppressing materials have been used in creating what Chevrolet claims is its quietest full-size car ever. The dashboard gets a ‘dual cockpit’ look, and the instrumentation includes a standard-fit 4.2” driver information screen.

Sales of the 2014 Chevrolet Impala are due to begin in early 2013, but prices have yet to be confirmed. The probability of it coming to Europe is pretty much zero.
