Top 10: Car sales Q2 2012

1,057,680 new cars were registered in the UK during the first half of 2012, an increase of 2.7% compared to last year’s figure.

That result was slightly better than had been predicted by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, and it follows a fourth successive month of year-on-year growth.

The market impetus has come solely from the private segment, which now accounts for 45% of sales. By contrast, the fleet and business sectors combined actually posted a small decrease.

As expected, the Ford Fiesta continues to be the UK’s best-selling car, although the rival Vauxhall Corsa has now moved up from third to second place in the registrations league table:
