2013 Honda CR-Z unveiled
Honda has announced some technical updates and cosmetic changes for its CR-Z hybrid coupé.
The 1.5 litre petrol engine now produces 119 bhp (89 kW / 121 PS) instead of 112 bhp (84 kW / 114 PS), thanks to modifications to the ECU and the variable valve timing system.
Combined with the Integrated Motor Assist hybrid powertrain - which for the first time uses a lithium ion battery pack and features a more powerful electric motor - total output has been raised to 135 bhp (100 kW / 137 PS).
The effect on performance isn’t too dramatic, although the zero to 62 mph (100 km/h) time has dropped from 9.7 to 9.0 seconds while the top speed is 124 mph (200 km/h). A new device called the Plus Sport (S+) boost system should help drivers make the most of the extra power, especially in the important mid-range. After activation via a steering wheel button, it provides ten seconds of boosted acceleration courtesy of the electric motor.
However, for a hybrid, the CR-Z’s efficiency remains somewhat disappointing. An average fuel consumption figure of 56.5 mpg (5.0 l/100km) and carbon dioxide emissions of 116 g/km aren’t spectacular, and there are conventional coupés such as the BMW 118d and BlueMotion versions of the Volkswagen Scirocco that achieve better mileage.
Distinguishing the 2013 Honda CR-Z are a redesigned front bumper, a revised rear diffuser and a refreshed interior colour scheme. Sales are due to begin next January, but prices have yet to be confirmed.
