Top 10: Car sales Q3 2012

Figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders show that 356,612 new cars were registered in the UK during the key plate-change month of September, an 8.2% increase on last year.

Most of that growth came from the private segment, as the business and fleet sectors combined remained fairly static. Of course, what’s not known is how many of the units included in the statistics are genuine sales, and not dealer pre-registrations.

Whatever the source, September’s performance means that total year-to-date registrations now stand at 1,620,609.

Predictably, the Ford Fiesta continues to top the sales chart, with a lead which seems unassailable.

The Ford Fiesta continues to head the UK car registration table,
and there's an updated version due soon.

Further down the league table, there were hardly any changes to the positions seen at the end of the second quarter, although the Vauxhall Insignia has lost its top ten place to the Fiat 500.
