90 years of BMW Motorrad

BMW will be celebrating ninety years of motorcycle production in 2013, so it has decided to mark the occasion with a trio of special editions. Appropriately (and very logically) named ‘90 Jahre BMW Motorrad’, they are based on the R 1200 R, R 1200 GS Adventure and R 1200 RT.

Compared to the standard models, the changes are purely cosmetic. On the R 1200 R, they include Sapphire Black paintwork with an Asphalt Grey metallic matt finish on the rear frame, swingarm, wheels and cylinder head covers. The engine is black, while the brake calipers and fork tubes have been anodised in gold.

Similarly, the R 1200 GS Adventure version comes in Sapphire Black, although some contrast is provided by an anodised Olive Grey effect on the lower tank sections. Those shades are repeated on the seat cover, and the remainder of the components follow the same themes seen on the R 1200 R.

Finally, the R 1200 RT is also painted Sapphire Black, with various elements including the fuel tank top, luggage carrier and handlebars finished in Magnesium metallic matt. Asphalt Grey is used on wheels, cylinder head covers, swingarm and footrest base plates.

As a finishing touch, all three feature an exclusive nickel-plated and polished brass plate ‘90 Jahre BMW Motorrad’ badge, which replaces the usual BMW logo on the fork bridge.

Perhaps more exciting than the special editions is an all-new model that BMW will be building to commemorate its anniversary. Announced at the EICMA show in Milan, it will be powered by an air-cooled boxer engine and combine ‘emotional styling and innovative technology’. For now, that’s all that BMW has revealed, but the teaser image provides some clues as to how it might look.
