M3 DTM Champion Edition

BMW returned to the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) this year and promptly won the manufacturers’ title. What’s more, BMW Team Schnitzer was victorious in the teams’ competition, plus its driver Bruno Spengler secured the drivers’ championship.

Quite a remarkable comeback then, which BMW is celebrating with the M3 DTM Champion Edition. Inspired by the look of Spengler’s race car, it combines a series of cosmetic tweaks with a standard specification that includes several items usually found only on the options list. Among these are the seven-speed M Dual Clutch Transmission, the Competition package and heated front seats.

The exterior features a Frozen Black metallic paint finish, matt black wheels and dark chrome trim pieces. An ‘M’ stripe running over the roof and boot lid works well, but the ‘M’ logos behind the front wheel arches seem rather tacky. As for the decals on the side windows, owners had better get used to being asked why their car has the Canadian flag and ‘SPE’ in large letters emblazoned on it.

On the inside, the cabin is trimmed with extended Novillo leather and the steering wheel is wrapped in Alcantara. A carbon fibre trim strip across the dashboard bears the car’s serial number as well as a facsimile of Spengler’s signature, while the door sill strips are based on his helmet design.

Just 54 examples of the M3 DTM Champion Edition will be built, with deliveries expected to begin next February. The price in Germany has been set at €99,000, which includes a driver training course at the Nürburgring Nordschleife under the tutelage of Bruno Spengler.
