2014 NACTOY shortlists

Following an initial vote by 48 jury members, the shortlists for the 2014 North American Car of the Year and 2014 North American Truck / Utility of the Year awards have been published.

From an original selection of 28 eligible models, twelve cars make it through to the next stage:
  • BMW 4 Series
  • Cadillac CTS
  • Chevrolet Corvette Stingray
  • Chevrolet Impala
  • Infiniti Q50
  • Jaguar F-Type
  • Kia Cadenza
  • Lexus IS
  • Mazda 3
  • Mazda 6
  • Mercedes-Benz CLA
  • Toyota Corolla
The jurors are now going to be polled once again to decide the three finalists. We’ll have to wait until the 10th of December to hear the result of that second ballot, but it should be a close-run thing given the diversity of the shortlisted twelve. Nevertheless, the BMW 4 Series, Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, Chevrolet Impala and maybe even the Jaguar F-Type should all have strong chances.

Similarly, twelve trucks / utilities go forward to the next round, picked from the 18 vehicles that were new enough to qualify for consideration:
  • Acura MDX
  • BMW X5
  • Buick Encore
  • Chevrolet Silverado
  • GMC Sierra
  • Hyundai Santa Fe LWB
  • Jeep Cherokee
  • Kia Sorento
  • Land Rover Range Rover Sport
  • Nissan Rogue

  • Toyota Tundra
Again, the wide range of products in this category means attempting to predict the three finalists is a tough task. The Jeep Cherokee, Land Rover Range Rover Sport and Nissan Rogue could all do well, though.

The Alfa Romeo MiTo supermini is now available with the innovative two-cylinder TwinAir petrol engine. Although its capacity is only 875 cc, a turbocharger and the MultiAir electro-hydraulic valve control system mean it produces a respectable 83 bhp (62 kW / 85 PS) and 145 Nm (103 lb/ft) of torque. Hyundai has confirmed specifications and pricing for its sporty i10 N Line. This new variant – which arrives at dealers later this month – benefits from some cosmetic tweaks, unique suspension components and a more powerful 1.0 litre T-GDi turbocharged petrol engine.

Honda WSB team launch

Honda has unveiled its works team for the 2011 World Superbike championship . The announcement of Castrol as title sponsor means the return to a very familiar colour scheme for the pair of CBR1000RR Fireblade bikes, which will be ridden by Jonathan Rea and Ruben Xaus. As in recent years, Honda has entrusted Dutch concern Ten Kate Racing with running the factory WSB team. First thing on the Castrol Honda agenda is a two day testing session at the Motorland Aragón circuit in Spain later this week. The 2011 WSB season comprises thirteen rounds with Phillip Island, Australia hosting the opening race on 27 February.
