2014 Nissan GT-R Nismo unveiled
Some people might think Nürburgring lap times are becoming hackneyed as a performance benchmark, but the Nordschleife remains a harsh test of a car’s suspension, brakes and engine. That the GT-R Nismo (fitted with track options) can get around the circuit in 7:08.679 - a volume production car record according to Nissan - is strong testament to the new arrival’s abilities.
Nismo’s modifications start with the 3.8 litre V6 motor, which gains larger diameter turbochargers, an upgraded fuel pump and changes to the ignition timing. The result is an output of 591 bhp (441 kW / 600 PS) with 652 Nm (481 lb/ft) of torque, figures that are up by 49 bhp (37 kW / 50 PS) and 20 Nm (14 lb/ft) respectively compared to the regular model.
It sits in a bodyshell made stiffer by the use of adhesive bonding in addition to the usual spot welding. A redesigned front bumper and a substantial carbon fibre rear wing meanwhile give an extra 100 kg (220 lbs) of down force at 186 mph (300 km/h).
Completing the package is a series of chassis upgrades. The racing-inspired set-up includes three-mode Bilstein DampTronic dampers, increased front wheel castor trail for better stability, a stiffer hollow rear anti-roll bar and black six-spoke 20” alloy wheels that come shod with specially-developed Dunlop tyres.
Available in a choice of five paintwork shades, sales of the 2014 Nissan GT-R Nismo are due to begin in Japan this February. Market launches in the United States and Europe will then follow soon afterwards.
