2015 Mini Cooper SD Hatch rated at 360 Nm

Turbocharged diesel engines often benefit from prodigious levels of torque, and the one in the new Mini Cooper SD 3-door Hatch continues the trend.

It’s a 2.0 litre, four-cylinder motor that features high-pressure common-rail injection and a variable turbine geometry turbo. Outputs are 167 bhp (125 kW / 170 PS) with an ample 360 Nm (265 lb/ft) of peak torque which arrives at just 1,500 rpm.

Consequently the Cooper SD will accelerate from rest to 62 mph (100 km/h) in a fairly brisk 7.3 seconds. By comparison the petrol-powered Cooper S Hatch achieves the same benchmark sprint in just 6.8 seconds, so the diesel model is a bit behind on performance.

As expected though the Cooper SD regains the advantage when matters turn to efficiency. It manages 68.9 mpg (4.1 l/100km) on the combined cycle with carbon dioxide emissions of 107 g/km, figures that fairly trounce the still respectable 49.6 mpg (5.7 l/100km) and 133 g/km of the Cooper S.

Available to order from July, on the road prices for the Cooper SD 3-door Hatch are going to start from £19,450. That’s £795 more than the equivalent Cooper S, therefore drivers will need to carefully consider whether such a premium could be recouped by any potential fuel cost savings.
