McLaren 650S GT3 shown at Goodwood
This year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed was the occasion chosen by McLaren for the debut of its 650S GT3.
An evolution of the 12C GT3 racer, much of the development work has focussed on improving the aerodynamics and cooling. To that end, the front and side air intakes are modified and there’s a redesigned splitter beneath the car’s nose.
Power is still provided by a 3.8 litre V8 twin-turbo engine that produces around 490 bhp (370 kW / 500 PS), but it now comes connected to a new six-speed sequential transmission. Furthermore, engine and gearbox rebuild intervals have been extended.
The chassis set-up has also received attention. As well as different 18” forged alloy wheels and a better braking system, the suspension components have been reworked resulting in tracks that are 52 mm (2.0”) wider than those of the 12C GT3.
Inside the cockpit the 650S GT3 gains a revised race seat and rollcage. Both FIA-approved, the former comes with a six-point harness and is said to offer greater comfort and support, while the latter is lighter and allows for more legroom and headroom.
McLaren anticipates that circa fifteen examples of 650S GT3 are going to be built, with customer deliveries expected to take place in time for the 2015 race season. Each will be priced at £330,000 plus tax, which is approximately US$563,000 or €412,000 at current exchange rates.
An upgrade kit is also being made available to existing 12C GT3 owners.
