Genesis offers a preview of its new G90

In the late 1980s, Toyota and Nissan satisfied their aspirations to move upmarket by launching the Lexus and Infiniti marques. Now Korean manufacturer Hyundai is doing something similar, as it has just announced the creation of a luxury brand named Genesis.

The ambitious plan is to introduce six models by 2020. First to arrive will be the range-topping G90 full-size saloon, a prospective rival to the likes of the Audi A8, Cadillac XTS and Lexus LS.

A couple of renderings have been released that give an indication of what the G90 is going to look like. Long, low proportions follow a visual language that Hyundai's Prestige Design Division calls 'Athletic Elegance'. Key styling features include a large grille at the front, which is connected to the rear light clusters by a prominent belt line.

Specification details have yet to be revealed but – as expected – decent driving dynamics, plenty of technology and numerous safety features are promised.

G90 sales begin in Korea next month, where it'll be known as the Genesis EQ900. Debuts are then planned for China, North America and the Middle East. Europe and the rest of Asia complete the list of territories due to get the car.
