Lotus launches the Elise Race 250

As its name suggests, the new Elise Race 250 is intended purely for competition use.

Like the recently-announced, road-going Elise Cup 250, power comes from a supercharged 1.8 litre four-cylinder engine that delivers 243 bhp (181 kW / 246 PS) and 250 Nm (184 lb/ft) of torque via a six-speed manual transmission.

A track-focussed suspension set-up comprises Nitron one-way adjustable dampers, Eibach coaxial coil springs and an adjustable front anti-roll bar. Augmenting the anti-lock braking system are AP Racing twin-piston front calipers, Brembo single-piston rear calipers and upgraded pads.

Visually, the most obvious addition is an aero package which consists of a front splitter, sill extensions, a rear diffuser and a rear wing. Lotus says that those components generate 66 kg (145 lbs) of downforce at 100 mph (160 km/h), or 155 kg (341 lbs) at the car's top speed of 154 mph (248 km/h).

Also fitted are a polycarbonate rear screen instead of the regular glass item, blanking plates where the headlights would usually go, and some extra towing eyes. The Race 250's ultra-light forged alloy wheels – 16” at the front and 17” at the rear – are shod with Yokohama AO48 tyres.

Inside, there's a roll cage, a fire extinguisher and a removable steering wheel. The driver, who gets to sit in a carbon fibre seat, is secured by a six-point harness.

In the UK, the Elise Race 250 is priced at £53,500 (including VAT), while in the USA it costs $76,200 (plus local taxes).
