Daimler and Bosch EV JV

Daimler AG and Robert Bosch GmbH are working on forming a joint venture to make motors for electric vehicles. The plan is for the operation to commence production in 2012, with the motors initially being used in Mercedes-Benz and Smart models.

However, it’s intended that the technology will also be made available to other manufacturers. Any such sales are going to be handled by Bosch.

Hyundai has added a second model to its ultra-efficient Blue range. The i20 Blue emits just 98 g/km of CO2 - good enough for zero road tax and exemption from the London Congestion Charge - and achieves an impressive 76.4 mpg (3.7 l/100km) on the combined cycle. But Hyundai hasn’t had to resort to a tiny capacity, low-output engine to get to those figures, as the Blue is powered by the 89 bhp (66 kW / 90PS) 1.4 CRDi common rail diesel. What it has done is fit low rolling resistance tyres, a stop-start system and aerodynamic deflectors for the rear suspension and wheels. Based on the existing Comfort trim level, standard equipment is comprehensive and includes air conditioning, an electronic stability programme, Bluetooth, USB and aux-in connections, electric heated and folding door mirrors, electric windows all round and 15” alloy wheels. 2013 Cadillac ATS revealed

The just-unveiled Cadillac ATS compact sports saloon has an important job to do for the brand. As Don Butler, vice president of marketing for Cadillac, says, “the ATS aims to change the status quo of the European-dominated segment.” And that means it’ll have to steal customers from the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Audi A4... not an easy task. The new arrival could also allow Cadillac to re-launch itself in Europe with a credible product offering. Apparently, it has been engineered to accommodate a diesel engine (although for North America three petrol engines will initially be available), and there’s even the possibility of a right-hand drive version. Based on an all-new platform, the ATS is claimed to offer superior driving dynamics combined with lightness. Electric car grants saved

The UK Plug-in Car Grant , which will cover up to 25% of the price of an electric car, has been saved. Originally announced back in March by the then Labour government, there had been fears the scheme would be scrapped by the Conservative / Liberal Democrat coalition to help reduce the public spending deficit. A decision wasn’t expected until the completion of the government’s autumn spending review, but today the Department for Transport confirmed that the money would be ring fenced. However, the rules of engagement have changed. Whereas the original proposal had £230 million set aside over five years, there’s now only £43 million allocated for the period January 2011 to March 2012. Any available budget beyond then won’t be confirmed until January 2012. Among the reasons given for the reprieve, Business Minister Mark Prisk said, “The consumer incentive will help Britain become one of the leading centres for the design, development and manufacture of ultra-low carbon vehicles....

Cadillac confirms ELR

Cadillac has announced that its striking Converj Concept will make it into production. To be known as ELR - in line with the marque’s three-letter model naming convention - the 2+2 coupé will feature range-extender technology similar to that used in the Chevrolet Volt. It’s still too early in the development process for even any provisional performance or efficiency data, though. Indeed, all Cadillac is saying for now is that the basic configuration will comprise a four-cylinder engine / generator, an electric drive unit and a large under-floor T-shaped lithium ion battery pack. As with the Volt, electricity will be the primary propulsion source, with the internal combustion engine kicking in when the battery’s charge runs low. Images © GM Corp. Caterham Seven Supersport

Caterham has announced a track-focussed addition to its Seven range. Called the Supersport, it has been developed directly from the version used in the Caterham Supersport championship. Power comes from a 140 bhp (104 kW / 141 PS) 1.6 litre Ford Sigma engine, connected to a five-speed gearbox with ‘sprint’ ratios. A fairly modest output but, as the Supersport weighs only 520 kg (1,146 lbs), it’s enough for a zero to 60 mph (96 km/h) time of 4.9 seconds. Claimed top speed is 120 mph (193 km/h). The chassis set-up features uprated dampers and springs, a limited slip differential and 13” wheels shod with Avon CR500 tyres. Completing the race-inspired package are composite race seats, four-point harnesses, dash-mounted gear change up lights, a lightened flywheel and an aero screen. UK price for the Caterham Seven Supersport is £22,995, although those seeking the satisfaction of building their own car can order it in component form for £19,995.
