First BMW 335i race car

BMW South Africa has revealed the all-new 335i that’ll be competing in the Bridgestone Production Cars class of the 2012 WesBank Super Series championship.

Developed with ADF Motorsport, it’s reckoned to be the first competition car anywhere in the world that is based on the recently-introduced sixth generation F30 3 Series.

Under the bonnet, the TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder, 3.0 litre engine remains basically standard, although boost is turned down to 0.7 bar and a 40 mm restrictor is fitted to the turbo inlet to comply with championship regulations.

Other changes include a replacement engine control unit which has both data logging and fault warning functions, while the stock exhaust system has been ditched in favour of one from Akrapovic.

As a result, the 1,360 kg (2,998 lbs) race car produces about 402 bhp (300 kW / 407 PS) and 600 Nm (442 lb/ft) of peak torque, figures that are both up significantly on the road-going version’s 301 bhp (225 kW / 306 PS) and 400 Nm (295 lb/ft).

The outfit will be run by Team Afrox, with Anthony Taylor and Etienne van der Linde confirmed as the drivers. As well as competing locally, the team is also planning to bring the 335i to Europe in May for the challenging Nürburgring 24 hour race.
