2014 Chevrolet Spark EV

The one statistic that most potential buyers of electric vehicles want to know is range, so Chevrolet’s caginess on the subject when it comes to the new Spark EV seems a little odd. Indeed, all we are being told for now is that the supermini ‘is expected to have among the best EV battery range in its segment’.

What makes such reticence even more questionable is that plenty of other technical details have been released. The motor, for example, develops 130 bhp (97 kW / 131 PS) with 542 Nm (400 lb/ft) of torque, resulting in a zero to 60 mph (96 km/h) time of under eight seconds.

Things are slightly vaguer when it comes to the lithium-ion battery pack, which will have a capacity of ‘more than’ 20 kWh. However, Chevrolet has stated that it will be warranted for eight years or 100,000 miles, while recharging via a 240V outlet should take less than seven hours. Alternatively, the optional SAE Combo DC Fast Charge facility can charge the battery to 80 percent capacity in around twenty minutes.

Identifying the electric Spark are various aerodynamic bodywork tweaks that are there to help maximise the car’s range. They include a rear spoiler, a blanked-off upper front grille, an active shutter system for the lower front grille, tyre deflectors, under-body panels and a rear diffuser. Low rolling resistance tyres are also fitted.

The 2014 Chevrolet Spark EV is due to make its public debut at this week’s Los Angeles International Auto Show. Canada, California, Oregon and South Korea have all been confirmed as initial markets and, with the benefit of tax incentives, the price in the United States will be under $25,000.
