Ford Focus ST updated for 2015

A slight facelift, modified suspension and the arrival of a diesel option define the refreshed 2015 Ford Focus ST.

Most of the visual changes are at the front end, where a redesigned bonnet and sharper headlights give the performance Focus a more purposeful look. On the inside, the supplementary instruments have been repositioned, plus the dashboard gains an 8” colour touchscreen that’s used to control Ford’s Sync2 infotainment system.

Output from the four-cylinder, turbocharged, 2.0 litre EcoBoost petrol engine remains at 246 bhp (183 kW / 250 PS) with 360 Nm (265 lb/ft) of peak torque. Efficiency is improved though, as it now achieves 41.5 mpg (6.8 l/100km) and emits 158 g/km of carbon dioxide thanks to the fitment of a start-stop device.

The ST is also going to be available with a diesel alternative for the first time. Producing 182 bhp (136 kW / 185 PS) and 400 Nm (295 lb/ft), the 2.0 litre TDCi motor unsurprisingly delivers less performance and much better economy.

A 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time of 8.1 seconds is 1.6 seconds longer than the petrol version manages, while the diesel’s top speed of 135 mph (217 km/h) is 19 mph (31 km/h) slower. However, those shortfalls are somewhat compensated by combined cycle figures of 64.2 mpg (4.4 l/100km) and 114 g/km.

Interestingly, Ford has deemed it necessary to recalibrate the ST’s steering and suspension to “deliver a driving experience that is even more responsive, balanced and refined”.

The extensive upgrades include replacement front springs, retuned dampers all-round, altered engine mounts and revised Electronic Torque Vectoring Control settings. Such a comprehensive reworking seems to be a tacit admission that the original ST front-wheel drive chassis didn’t handle 250 horsepower as well as it might have done.

European sales of the 2015 Focus ST are due to begin early next year. A choice of five-door hatchback and estate body styles will continue to be offered.
