Top 10: UK car sales Q2 2014

1,287,265 new cars were registered in the UK during the first six months of 2014, according to data just published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

That total, a 10.6% increase on the same period last year, was the highest half-year figure recorded since 2005.

One category continuing to show particular growth is alternative fuel vehicles (anything that doesn’t run solely on petrol or diesel), which is up by over 50 percent so far this year. However, it’s worth pointing out that with 23,337 registrations, it still accounts for just 1.8% of the market.

Turning to the top ten models, the list is virtually identical to the first quarter’s. Indeed, the only significant movements were a two-place fall for the Volkswagen Polo and a two-place rise for the Audi A3.

Moto Guzzi V7 Record kit

Inspired by the 1969 V7 Record that set several speed records for Moto Guzzi, the new Record kit has been designed to give current-generation V7 models a retro endurance racer look. Included is a lightweight fibreglass front fairing (which handily uses the existing headlight), plus a replacement single seat unit that features memory foam. The kit can be fitted to the V7 Café and V7 Racer without any modifications. Bullet Classic goes green

The Royal Enfield Bullet Classic definitely has a certain charm about it. Now it’s available as a Battle Green version, which pays homage to the company’s long relationship with the Indian Army. The association dates back to 1949, when Royal Enfield first set up an operation in Chennai to build a military spec 350 cc Bullet. Despite its 1950s looks, the Bullet Classic is surprisingly modern. The entire range received a new 499 cc engine back in 2009, featuring fuel injection and a five-speed transmission. Fortunately for riders not familiar with the traditional Royal Enfield set up, this also saw the gear change move to the left side of the bike. The Euro 3 compliant single cylinder engine produces 27 bhp (20 kW / 28 PS) and, while it’s never going to make the bikes the fastest on the market, its near 80 mpg (3.5 l/100km) fuel consumption is impressive.
