2016 Smart fortwo cabrio first view

Ahead of a public debut at next month's Frankfurt International Motor Show, Smart has released the first images of its new fortwo cabrio.

Obviously, the 'tritop' folding roof arrangement is a major difference compared to the existing coupé version. Made of canvas and available in black, blue or red, it can be partially or fully retracted in twelve seconds. Furthermore, the roof bars are removable for a completely open-top look.

Other styling changes include slimmer B-pillars and a slightly altered tridion safety cell. Beneath the skin, reinforcing measures include hot-formed steel tubes in the A-pillars, additional bulkheads and an under-body crossbeam. As a result, Smart says the 2016 fortwo cabrio is around 15 percent torsionally stronger than its predecessor.

The engine line-up comprises normally-aspirated 999 cc and turbocharged 898 cc options that produce 70 bhp (52 kW / 71 PS) and 89 bhp (66 kW / 90 PS) respectively. Both of these three-cylinder units can be specified with either a five-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed 'twinamic' automated dual-clutch transmission.

When deliveries of the fortwo cabrio begin in February 2016, buyers will have a choice of passion, prime and proxy trim grades. Prices have yet to be announced.
