Extra range for the electric Renault Zoe

A new 'Z.E. 40' lithium-ion battery should make Renault's electric-powered Zoe a practical proposition for many more people.

It boasts a 41 kWh capacity. That translates into a very useful range of 248 miles (400 kilometres) according to the NEDC measure, or 186 miles (300 kilometres) in real-world urban and suburban conditions.

By comparison, the existing 22 kWh pack (which is still going to be available) achieves NEDC and real-world figures of 149 miles (240 kilometres) and 106 miles (170 kilometres) respectively.

Importantly, both options have the same physical dimensions and similar recharge times. Renault reckons that plugging-in for half an hour allows the car to be driven for another 50 miles (80 kilometres), for example.

UK sales of the revised Zoe range will begin in November. Prices and battery rental costs have yet to be announced.
