2019 Toyota Century unveiled

Lexus might be considered the more upmarket brand, but in Japan captains of industry and other luminaries who like to be chauffeur driven prefer a particular Toyota. The subject of their attention is the Century.

For the first time in twenty-one years, this imposing yet understated limousine has just been completely redesigned. However, elegant three-box proportions, subtle styling details and a highly-polished paint finish are retained, so the car’s traditionally conservative customer base shouldn’t feel at all alienated.

They’ll also appreciate the plush interior. Or, more specifically, the rear compartment with its privacy curtains, wood trim, 11.3” entertainment monitor and 7” touchpad that controls numerous functions.

The left-hand back seat – the one nearest the kerb – benefits from an integrated massager and a power-operated extending leg rest. In addition, the door sills are now lower to aid ease of entry and headroom has been increased.

A smooth ride and a quiet cabin are essential when trying to create a luxury ambience. Consequently, the Century features electronically-controlled adaptive air suspension, bespoke tyres, plenty of sound insulation and active noise control.

Power is provided by a hybrid system that combines a 5.0 litre V8 petrol engine, an electric motor and a nickel-metal hydride battery pack. Total output is rated at 425 bhp (317 kW / 431 PS).

Toyota is hoping to sell fifty examples of the Century each month in Japan. The starting price there is ¥19,600,000, which equates to approximately £134,700 / US$178,600 / €153,200 at current exchange rates.
