One-off Eagle Squadron Mustang GT unveiled

Between September 1940 and July 1941, fighter squadrons 71, 121 and 133 were formed by the Royal Air Force. Remarkably, almost all of their pilots were volunteer American citizens, so they were officially known as the Eagle Squadrons.

That Second World War episode is now being commemorated by a unique car. Ford Performance and RTR Vehicles have collaborated to create the Eagle Squadron Mustang GT Fastback, which wears a period-inspired camouflage colour scheme. Also part of the look is a roof-mounted decal depicting the eagle emblem worn by Eagle Squadron personnel on their uniforms.

An RTR wide-body kit and a Tactical Performance suspension upgrade are among the other modifications. Furthermore, fitting a supercharger has helped to lift the 5.0 litre V8 engine’s output from the usual 460 bhp (343 kW / 466 PS) to 700 bhp (522 kW / 709 PS).

The Eagle Squadron Mustang is due to appear at next month’s Goodwood Festival of Speed. A couple of weeks later, at the Experimental Aircraft Association AirVenture Oshkosh event in Wisconsin, it’ll be sold via auction in aid of the EAA’s youth education activities.
