2020 Mitsubishi ASX first view

Mitsubishi’s ASX is rapidly approaching its tenth birthday. In automotive terms, that’s fairly ancient, so the compact SUV is getting another facelift to help it stay relevant in an increasingly crowded market segment.

Bodywork updates – described as “robust and ingenious” by Mitsubishi – focus on a restyled front end. The result is a bolder grille, a modified bumper and revised lights which together follow the brand’s ‘Dynamic Shield’ design language.

Another significant change involves the engine line-up. Because Mitsubishi has decided to drop the diesel option, the only unit now being offered is a 2.0 litre petrol. There’s still plenty of transmission choice, though. Customers can specify either a five-speed manual or a continuously-variable automatic gearbox, plus two- and four-wheel drive versions are available.

Some of the on-board technology has been enhanced, too. For instance, the Smartphone-link Display Audio system gains a larger 8” screen, plus Forward Collision Mitigation braking is fitted.

The 2020 ASX is due to début at next month’s Geneva International Motor Show. UK prices have yet to be confirmed.
